Registering in Magdeburg

Anyone who plans to stay in Magdeburg for longer than three months must register with the city’s residents’ registration office (Bürgerbüro) within two weeks of arrival. To do this you will need your passport/identity card and the following form: Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. If, during your stay in Germany, you move house, you must inform the residents’ registration office of your new address (change of address notification) and provide them with your current accommodation provider’s confirmation. Before you leave Magdeburg and Germany for good, you should also give notice of your departure (at the latest 1 week before you leave).

There are two registration pathways in Magdeburg, as a distinction is made in the residents’ registration office between EU citizens and non-EU citizens.

EU Citizens: You come from a European Union member state. The check list details the things that you will need to take with you when you register:

  • accommodation provider’s confirmation
  • passport / identity card
  • biometric photo

In some cases, you may also need to provide additional documentation such as a

  • certificate of enrolment or letter of admission
  • European health insurance card and
  • proof of adequate means of subsistence (see right of abode).

This will enable you to register for the EU freedom of movement certificate. This will arrive by post within a few days

Non-EU Citizens: If you come from a country outside of the European Union, then you will need

  • an accommodation provider's confirmation and
  • a passport / identity card.

This will enable you to obtain a registration document from the residents’ registration office for your stay in Magdeburg.

If you move within the Federal Republic of Germany, you must notify the new registration office of your new address. However, if you move within Germany, it is not necessary to deregister from your old place of residence. As soon as your stay in Germany ends and you leave the country, the relevant residents’ registration office must be notified of the end of your stay via the "Abmeldung der Meldebehörde".
